|| Ashtrays ||"1. In a Jar (from the album Best of Bakers at Dawn) – Bakers at Dawn - If I were asked to choose a favorite new artist for the year, it would easily be Bakers at Dawn. In a Jar is only one of my favorite of his songs (and its not even one of the ones where he sounds exactly like Elliott Smith!). It’s short and demo-y, very raw. The lyrics aren’t terrific (although, admittedly, the voice pretty much is), and the guitar isn’t all that special. Two other instruments appear briefly, though, and while they’re oftentimes background, almost indistinguishable from the guitar, both lend the song an interesting texture, and all of it fits together perfectly. It sounds good -- really good. Other songs may be catchy, may appeal to some fleeting sensation or resonate only among a select few, may hit and then fade quickly away. It’s rare that a song comes along that doesn’t do any of those things, but is instead simply and in its own right a good song. In a Jar, I think, does that. This song is gonna last."
|| choir croak out them goodies ||"This past May, Series Two Records in Nebraska released a record by Bakers at Dawn (from Sweden!). Bakers at Dawn is a mostly-solo effort from Marcus Sjoland, and seeing as I don't quite have that knack for adjectives or imagery, I'll leave you with an appropriate description of Sjoland's music that's been snatched from Series Two: Bakers at Dawn wants his music to sound either like a cold rock wrapped up in a warm blanket, or a warm blanket wrapped around a cold rock."
|| Fazer Magazine ||"Bakers at Dawn’s self-titled debut sounds like a triumphant return to the era of great singer/ songwriters. It’s infamous lo-fi “bedroom recording” quality that Series two has become famous for makes the album sound like an early 90’s alternative release. With influences ranging from Nirvana (Building Material), Pavement (Tomorrow) , and Beck (Hopeful) Bakers At Dawn are sure not to disappoint. "
|| FensePost (full album review) ||"Bakers At Dawn initially comes off sounding slightly like a less melodramatic, early version of Bright Eyes. Their songs fit the super lo-fi mold, yet have a substantial amount of pop. The Malmo, SE band has found its way onto Series Two Records, the same folks who brought us Springfactory and Tafra, among others. Their debut is on the Series Two Compilation Vol. 1, but they just released a full-length on the label. From the four tracks by the group on the compilation, only one has found its way to the full-length, that being "Oh No". Suprisingly, "How I Saved Julieanne" did not; it's a strong lo-fi pop tune that matches "Oh No" as a power track. If you dig soft pop with a lo-fi quality, definitely check out Bakers At Dawn. And while you're at it, head over to Series Two and grab yourself a comp. In the meantime, I’ll eagerly await the full-length."
|| FensePost (volume 1 compilation review for Bakers At Dawn) ||"Folk-pop is the name of the game on the self titled debut of Bakers At Dawn. For the most part, the thirteen tracks contained within meet their mark; they’re melodic and pleasant—everything we know Swedish pop to encompass. Swedish pop is, at least in terms of its homogenous nature, kinda like 90s US alternative—it is easily recognizable as Swedish pop and the same is true for Swedish folk-pop. The instrumentation, at times, can be likened to Neutral Milk Hotel, while Bakers At Dawn front-man Marcus Sjöland comes off somewhere around Son, Ambulance’s Jeff Koster. Tunes like “Endless” and “Oh No” and “Silly Gun” live up to these similarities. The finger plucked guitars in the latter hint at early Son, Ambulance, while the former is somewhat reminiscent of NMH. But, it’s in songs like “Hopeful” and “Lay It Aside”, when these similarities are minimal or even nonexistent, where Bakers At Dawn appears most comfortable. The latter moves away from the folk to almost become electro-pop, and also proves to be one of the best tunes on the album. It is this album’s “Electronic Renaissance” (from Belle And Sebastian’s Tigermilk). While I would hardly call Sjöland a Stuart Murdoch, I would give Bakers At Dawn two thumbs up."
|| BIBABIDI ||"Nebraska's CD-R indie label, Series Two has added a new artist to its roster, and, as usual, made a wonderful selection! Bakers at Dawn (AKA Marcus Sjoland) hails from Malmö and sounds sort of like Elliott Smith or Nick Drake ... done Swedish style. The singer/songwriter has released a CD-R album on the twee/lo-fi label, Canarie Records and now has a new album out on Series Two entitled Best of Bakers at Dawn (he's only been around for three years or so and is already releasing retrospective compilations of sorts ... must be a prolific guy). The below MP3s are pretty low quality, unfortunately, so just sample 'em and buy the full-length over at Series Two Records' MySpace page. It's hot and sunny in L.A., but this slow, melodious, and contemplative music seems somehow fitting. It brings peace and harmony to the cacophony outside."
|| Coast Is Clear (in German) ||"Etwas erdiger, folkiger geht es bei den schwedischen Bakers at Dawn zu, dem Projekt von Marcus Sjoland, deren amerikanisches Label Series Two Records, auf dem das BaD Best of erscheint, mir drei Songs zugemailt hat."
|| What To Wear During An Orange Alert? ||"Marcus Sjoland is a Swedish musician who creates beautiful music. Bakers at Dawn wants his music to sound either like a cold rock wrapped up in a warm blanket, or a warm blanket wrapped around a cold rock."
|| Mp3hugger ||"Been awake since 4am, always happens after too much grog, fast easy sleep followed by insomnia. Lie there in constant twisty turny mode until I realise it’s getting bright outside and I’d be better served catching up on some new music. Not the loud stuff though, something soft and uncomplicated but with the essence of genuine talent. This morning Bakers at Dawn feels like the perfect fit, lo-fi recordings in an acoustic setting with handcrafted melodies. Malmo based Marcus Sjoland is the engine and his cut and paste retrospective is out now on Series Two Records. Budget didn’t allow for production sheen but songs this good always sounds better without superfluous framing. Sjoland put it perfectly when he said he wanted his music to sound either like a cold rock wrapped up in a warm blanket, or a warm blanket wrapped around a cold rock. You see, ideal listening for someone in need of Z’s who lacks the wise to catch them. KD"
|| Little Box Of Indie ||"The soft spoken band Bakers at Dawn (Marcus Sjoland) is a classic example of the new Nordic indie sound. Some tracks could be compared to José González, while others have more of an early 90’s Radiohead and Grandaddy feel. It’s really hard to describe, so just take a listen and visit his Myspace page where you can buy some of his songs on some really neat compilations put together by his label Series Two Records."
