Safety First's promo-only demo opens by proclaiming, "We're taking over and you know it." Whether or not the "we" refers to the band is anybody's guess, but assuming it does, they're using an inventive and creatively layered variety of instruments to do so. More impressive still is the fact that songwriter Pete Gidlund engineered and produced this collection of indie pop tunes from his one bedroom apartment.
Notice hints of anything from Weezer to Beulah as the band's strong vocal harmonies overlay diligent instrumentation. The melodies are sweet, the humor is dark, and with anything from tuned water glasses to glockenspiel mixed into the soundscape, there's a lot going on.
The band is obviously talented on many levels, from electronic lo-fi composition to good old chord driven pop/rock. If variety is a spice, you'll need a glass of water to go along with Safety First. -Joel Doss
