What does MTQ mean?
Here's the deal: every record is rated on its Mix Tape Quotient, or MTQ. This is the number of songs on that album that merit repeat listening (and hence, being mix tape-worthy). For example, a great 3-song 7" would get 3/3 or a hit-and-miss 12-song cd would get 7/12. Sure, it can sometimes be a little more challenging for me to rate a record this way, but I still find it more useful than a simple 1-5 star rating system!

Sea Lions - "Let's Groove" 7" (Yay!)For this recent Yay! single, let's start with the flipside. "Beautiful Day" and "Good Feelings" are a pair of absolutely perfect bursts of energetic jangle pop that could've been taken off of a Sha La La flexi two decades ago - think of the first time you heard "Jenny Nowhere", "The Sun Slid Down Behind The Tower" or "Baby Blue Marine" (okay, not a Sha La La track, but fitting nonetheless), and prepare to feel that same way again! Flipping back to the A-side (after repeating the b-side's two songs a few times, of course), we've got the title track, which is an instrumental tune that sounds like a revved-up and surfier Cat's Miaow. Normally, instrumentals are lost on me, but after a couple listens, I found that I did enjoy this jaunty tune afterall. The b-side's totally where it's at, though. MTQ=3/3
