Biography
Magic Crayon was formed in principles of year 2000 by César Zanin (that was integrant of the Moonrise) and
Marco Costa (that was integrant of Harry). Soon after the first rehearsals with drum machine in the basement of Cesar's
house, Gilberto Custódio Jr (that was integrant of the Comespace) and Fábio Barbosa (integrant of the Gasolines and
Transistors) enter the band. In the first rehearsals the band composed one song after another, but then Marco has to
leave due to personal problems. César starts to sing and the band continues. After many shows the band starts to record
its first songs. They recorded only the drums in a proper studio, all the others instruments were recorded in César's living
room, with a 4-Track and a computer. They released a four song EP in CD-r format. The
repercussion was great. People started asking for shows, a local label called Slag helps to distribute the EP and one of the best indiepop-related pages in the internet,
IndiePages, offered a space in its own domain.
The band was asked to do shows in the south of Brazil (Porto Alegre and Curitiba). But sadly Barbosa had problems with
work and could not travel with the band. Then Ricardo came to substitute him in those shows. The band came back to
São Paulo and played more shows with Ricardo in the drums. They played some great covers in this period, like "Let's
Get it On" by Marvin Gaye, "Minha Menina" by Mutantes and "Tom Courtney" by Yo La Tengo. Along with their own songs,
of course. And that's it. Magic Crayon finishes this period and starts to think in a female vocalist and a second guitarist.
Megssa (that was integrant of Fish Lips) and Paulo (who plays in P.O.S.T. and many others bands) were asked to enter
the band. Paulo and Megssa have a side-project called The Luos, but that's another history. Barbosa re-joined the band
and they start to rehearsal. Sooner they composed many songs and start to record it, in the same way they recorded
before: drums in a proper studio and the rest in César's living room. They recorded 5 songs and released a CD-r under the
name "Whatever You Say Is A Lie (So Fucking Romantic)". Now they are looking for a
record label to release and distribute it.
Barbosa plays drums in Gasolines and
Transistors, César has a side-project called Zanin and plays with Spectros, Paulo plays guitar
in P.O.S.T., The Luos, Monotapese nd Raymond Greenheart, Megssa sings and plays acoustic-guitar in The Luos and
Gilberto writes a fanzine called Esquizofrenia.
