The Spinanes
The Spinanes are Rebecca Gates, guitarist and vocalist, and Scott Plouf, drummer. They play delightful rock music and are one of my favorite bands. I think Scott lives here in Washington state now, so Rebecca answered my questions. You really should check them out, because their music is the perfect blend of pop and rock, loud and soft, soothing and angry. |

What took so long? What have you been doing since Manos? We
toured a lot after the release of Manos, then when that was done, took some time off. I
don't write songs on the road, so it took a while to be home and get that together....
.. Why have you been playing so many shows around Seattle? (Not that I mind...) Just happenstance really.......we played our own shows, then got asked to do Bumbershoot, and then we were on tour with Superchunk, so we played wherever they played. No Seattle shows for awhile now though... Did you ever decide what the "G" in G-string stands for? No. What were you guys like in high school? Quiet. Do you ever get on each other's nerves? Of course. We're human. Is being rock stars like you thought it would be? We don't consider ourselves rock stars... I think we would have more money if we were.... What were the best and worst shows you've played? Worst show was probably in Alabama 2 years ago. The sound man told us he had bit someone's nose off, the owner was a weasel who tried not to pay us, then later, tried to get us drunk and not pay us. No one showed up, the only thing that saved it was that Hazel was playing with us. Best show......we just played the Fillmore in S.F. opening for Superchunk, and that was a good one. Where are you loved best? I have no idea. What kind of music do you like/favorite bands? I like a lot of different music.... The Rolling Stones, Fugazi, Cecilia Bartoll, dance, hip-hop, jazz.....Red Red Meat, Superchunk, some country and blues.....Scott likes The Smiths a lot. What about the eagerly-awaited new album? Any recording stories? The new album is called "Strand" and will be released Feb 27 1996. We recorded it in Memphis at Easely Studios, and mixed it in Chicago with Brad Wood. At both studios we had little kids from the neighborhood trying to sneak in to play the drums. Last messages for Today's Youth? I'm keen on encouraging people to floss their teeth, also to say "please" and "thank you." Good dental hygiene and excellent manners never go out of style. | ||
