Slabco.

The Slabco candy store is run by Steven in good old Emerald City. Cassettes are $4 each, as are 45s. Comp. tapes are $3 (and, like a bag of mixed candy, are a great way to see what you like). You can also get issues of his zine, .Slop Hut. for $2, so dig in! My fave tape label!
Why do you make tapes? I make tapes because there is no large initial investment like CD’s + vinyl.

How old are you? I am 25 years old.

How long have you been making tapes? I have been making tapes since 1990 (six years I guess).

Has your label changed in any way since you started it? Not much has changed except for more orders + more friends and the music has become less chaotic.

Do you do your label solo, or do you get help? I do most of the stuff alone but my girlfriend Jovita helps me with a lot of things like picking up covers from the printer and helps me to think I’m not completely wasting my time.

What type of music do you tend to put out/how do you decide what to put on your label? All the music is by friends of mine and it usually has sampled drums, Casios and other samples and it has to be creamy!

How concerned are you with your product’s appearance, and what does your average tape look like? All the tapes have full color covers which is important... I like the tapes to look like candy...

How do you decide how many copies you’re going to make of any tape? On average, how many copies of a tape do you usually make? I make the copies of tapes as I need them which has varied from 4 to 700...

How do you get your tapes dubbed? I dub all the tapes myself (for technoids only: I use a D.A.T. master and tape onto two Tascam 202 Mk11’s so I can do four tapes at a time).

Do you also do 7"s? How come? Yes I do 7"s because people actually listen to them as opposed to cassettes.

How do you promote/advertise your stuff? I’m pretty bad with the promotion + I don’t advertise much.

Do you make any kind of profit on your tapes? Break even? Lose money? Over the past five years I have definitely lost money making tapes.

Do you have any exciting new plans? Lotsa’ exciting new plans including more 7"s + 2 full lengths (Sukpatch + Volume All*Star) so I’ll keep you posted... I’m also planning on actually trying to promote + advertise...yipee!
