More Music

These are the things that either got here too late or just didn't make it onto the tape. Bite-size reviews!
The Fastbacks - Win Lose or Both CD (Popllama)
Yay for The Fastbacks! Popllama has suddenly revived and is doing rad stuff again. The Fastbacks can do no wrong. These new songs are as good as any of their others while still sounding new. It's only four new songs, but then there are nine rad old songs recorded live. I'm into it.

Gaze - Mitsumeru CD (K)
Very well-executed pop songs about people being jerks and other things. It's sort of Go Sailor-ish in that way (think "Fine Day for Sailing", but less sugar-sweet). I like.

The I Live the Life of a Movie Star Secret Hideout - Cherries Constantine LP (Radio Argot)
This is a very pleasant one-sided LP, full of calmly catchy pop songs, sung by a boy and a girl, with minimal guitar and drums. Aside from the music, I love the silkscreened cover and I hate the 30 seconds of silence between each song. By the time the next song comes on, you've forgotten you were playing a record at all and you jump out of your skin. Terrible. "Radio Argot" is the house favorite.

Julie Doiron - Loneliest in the Morning CD (Sub Pop)
Yay, this is Julie from Eric's Trip, of course, and she is as wistful and softly pretty as ever. The songs are very simple, but they know what they're doing, and I like it. Another quiet-time album. I like this a lot, as I do most ET-related things. Mmmmm.

The Push Kings - Blowin' Up! 7" (Sealed Fate)
The Push Kings serve up more of the same sexy pop that's going to make them famous. Can I help it if it makes me wanna dance? No, I cannot. If you don't like this, you're trying too hard not to.

Radiolaria - Fuzz is Verse CD (Twist Top)
This is Marc, who apparently used to be in Sukpatch, and Korin, Jane, and Carrie, who I know nothing about. But this sounds nothing like Sukpatch; it's quiet fuzzy indie rock stuff with girl and boy vocals. Pretty good, especially if you're going to sleep or waking up or just feeling sort of quiet and reflective.

Wolfie - Awful Mess Mystery CD (Mud)
Hey, this is neat! Whenever Chris or I talk to anybody, they go, "hey, I've got this CD by this great new band" and it's always WOLFIE! Taking the world by storm. The press kit tells me to say "stripped down new-wavey pop rock with male/female vocals," so I'll follow orders. I also want to say that the songs are short tight punky numbers. Bang bang bang, gotcha! This is the best thing in the world.

Various - We Can Still Be Friends CD (Magic Marker)
This is a pretty damn good comp! My favorite songs on it are from Boycrazy, IFOJ, Mad Planets (it'd be better if it was a new song, but oh well), Tullycraft, Kincaid., Heber Binary Project, Kisswhistle, and Benji Cossa. The only song I hate is the Racecar song. The IFOJ song is from the olden days and sounds a lot like a cross between "Greatest Thing" and "Stronger." I like it a lot! The Kincaid. song sounds a bit like one of the songs on their last CD. I like it, though. Kincaid. are the kings of laid-back indie rock. And what's up with Gumption? I'd never heard them before, but this song's great! Benji Cossa manages to sound like he's in the Romantics, which is a good thing. Almost everything on here is ace, so I say go get this!

Various - The World of the Zombies CD (Popllama)
I love this. The Zombies were one of the raddest bands ever, and here are a bunch of great Seattle power-pop bands covering all their best songs (except for "You Make Me Feel So Good," which is brilliant!). But most of the songs are very true to the originals, so you can't go wrong. My favorites are the ones by the Fastbacks, because it's a perfect combination of two great bands. To sate your curiosity, the other bands on here are Zumpano, Flop, The Posies, The Young Fresh Fellows, Sneetches, Model Rockets, and Steam Kings. Zowie!
