Pillowcase was a "one-off" project consisting of Mike Headley (pictured at right, getting ready to jump on the four-track during the Dine-n-Dash session) on guitar and vocals, and me on drums. It all started when he heard me play drums one day. I'd known him for a year prior, but he never knew that I could play drums. It just so happened that he was recording stuff for himself and wanted to put drums on, but he felt inadequate at them. So he asked me to record some of his songs with him (just solo recordings for his own purpose).
The first Pillowcase practice consisted of us mostly playing a lot of Lemonheads and Smudge songs (like our Alison/Alison's Startin' To Happen medley), but we also managed to work on a few of Mike's originals. I really loved the songs he was writing, and wanted other people to hear them as well. Although he was quite shy, I wanted him to release a tape on Jigsaw. This coincided with the discovery of a cache of blue cassette singles (200!), which dawned the idea of a Jigsaw limited cassingle series, with Pillowcase being the pioneer!
We recorded all five songs in one afternoon, with the guitar and drums first, then overdubbed the bass & vocals. Mike played the bass on the first song, but since he'd never really played bass before, he wanted me to play on the rest of the songs. The covers were made (cheaply, of course) that evening, and the tapes were all dubbed in the following couple weeks; 50 in total. It was definitely a lot of fun, and I really wish the tape were still available, as it's one of my favorite Jigsaw releases. Totally classic with five songs in nine minutes. Pillowcase never got to play live, because Mike didn't want to (though I thought we were ready!), and we broke up when I had to move away. Now the songs are immortalized here...
