Okay - you've got your site, you've got your web space - now to get
your site up online. If you're using a free host, like Geocities, it's likely
that they have some kind of web-based upload utility in your file
manager. That's all well and good, but if you want to get your site
up quickly and have way more flexibility and options, you will want to
use an FTP client. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, and is how you can upload and download your files. You can download a variety of free FTP clients, all of which look different, but work basically the same way. For Windows, you've got CuteFTP, which isn't free, but has a basically unlimited trial period. CuteFTP is very easy to use (lots of drag and drop). For a free FTP client with full functionality, there's WS-FTP (click on "Also Available WS-FTP LE" - that's the free one). It's sort of clunkier, but works fine. The main FTP program for Macs is Fetch. I'm not going to tell you how to use each program - there should be help files that come with the software that will explain it all to you. The basic message is if you want your site on the web you've got to upload it! |
