Steward

"Steward" was the self mocking moniker Stewart took up after Boyracer's initial collapse in 1996 when Matty moved to Spain, Nicola got a job and Stewart and Ged went back to school. The initial thinking was, given the enforced (and embraced) solo direction, was to go more "electronic" and "progressive". However, electronic music got very boring by the end of the 90s and it was welcoming to restart the ‘Racer with renewed vigour with a heart full of punk rock and fuzzed up guitars. It's possible there may be more Steward at some point, but at time of writing nothing new has been recorded as Steward since 2002.

Cannanes

The Cannanes were a huge influence on Stewart and he is big fan and was more than thrilled to have been given the opportunity to step into David Nichols' very big shoes, (who is Stewart's favourite drummer). On these recordings, the Cannanes were mostly Fran (vocal/keyboard/bass), Stephen (guitar/bass/trumpet/keyboard) and Stewart (drums/vocal/guitar/bass/keyboard). "I think the happest moments of my live performance ‘career’ have been on stage playing drums with the Cannanes". (Stewart, 2003)

  • 1991 "Sirens" 3 track 7" (Fluff, UK - honey 04)

Empress

Empress was an attempt at a ‘band’ based around Nicola’s songs, with Stewart's encouragement and song arrangement. Stewart played most of the instruments, (sans vocal natch), but left the band in 2000 after a well-documented episode. As of 2004, Nicola lives in Australia and we think still records as Empress, when suitably motivated, with Michael Nichols. Chris Coyle wherabouts unknown.

Fog And Ocean

F+O was the brainchild of David Nichols and features Stewart, Jen Turrell, David Nichols (Huon etc), Andrew Withycombe (Hydroplane/Huon), Mia Schoen (Sleepytownship/ Long Weekend/ Huon), Greg Wadley (New Waver) and Kellie Sutherland (Architecture In Helsinki). F+O have only ever played one live show. It was awesome, and you should have been there...

  • 2002 s/t CD 13 tracks.

Huon

Stewart was invited to record and play with Huon in 2000 whilst living in Melbourne Australia. It was a huge thrill to play with David Nichols and his incredulously cool and talented friends. See also Grey Tapes.

  • 2001 Stewart played on 5 of the 8 tracks on the 10" gold vinyl "Disco Square" EP (555, UK - 555LP18)
  • 2001 "Tragedy" from the 4 track silver vinyl 7" EP (555, UK - 55526)

Stewart co-wrote and played on 7 of the 12 tracks. This is David Nichols' solo project, where David sings and drums on all tracks. Other ‘members’ on the recordings are Mia Schoen, Andrew Withycombe, James Dutton, Greg Wadley and Jen Turrell.

  • 2003 "Grey Tapes" CD (555, USA - 555CD60)

The How

A crazed take on a Who tribute band, WITHOUT a bass guitar. Line Up: Matt Hartman (Cat Power/Coachwhips/Henry's Dress/Total Shutdown) on vocal and guitar, and Stewart on drums. More tracks have been recorded, although with Matt busy with his other bands, it has been difficult to schedule any definite future plans.

  • 2006 “When I Was A Boy” c/w “Happy Matt” (Slumberland, USA - SLR069) red vinyl in special silk screened see thru sleeve
  • 2001 "Dreaming Of Lily" split blue vinyl 7" (w/The Aislers Set) (555, UK - 55530 / Slumberland USA - SLR75)

The Young Untold

The Young Untold is Ara (lead vocal, guitar), Jen (bass) and Stew (Drums). Those of you lucky enough to catch Boyracer live in the past year or so when Ara has been with us may have seen us play some of these songs live. A full length release will hopefully happen sometime soon….

  • 2005 “I've been feeling a lot of emotions lately” 6 track CD (Chocolate Feathers)

Mike Nichols And His Excellency

In the good old days when I still had a shred of respect for Michael, he lived with us for 3 months (before he slept with my girlfriend of course), and we recorded some pretty fine tunes. Line Up: Mike Nichols, Richard Adams (Hood) and Stewart.

  • 2001 "Slingback Modern" and "The New Style Poetry" 7" picture disc (555, USA - 55533)

Possum Moods

Possum Moods was written and recorded in two nights in Melbourne, by Mia Schoen and Jen Turrell. Goodness knows what would have happened had the girls had a whole week together. It has been observed that Possum Moods was put together as a knee jerk response to "The Grey Tapes" which was seen by some a drunken boys' night out. Whereas Possum Moods is certainly a drunken girls night in. Stewart plays drums on 5 of the 14 tracks.

  • 2007 “Possum And The Moods” 12 track CD (555, USA - 555CD074)
  • 2002 "Possum Moods" CD (Red Square, USA - RSQ024)

A Few Bears In A Hut In The Woods Somewhere

A true supergroup formed for one afternoon only in David + Mia’s shed. We recorded 3 songs and all swapped instruments and no-one can really remember who played what, but the people involved were: Amy Linton (Aislers Set), Tali White (Lucksmiths), David Nichols, Mia Schoen, Andrew Withycombe (all Huon), John Nikki (Gene Defcom/Sarah Dougher band), Jen Turrell and Stewart.

  • 1991 "Marjorie" on "A Nostalgic Glimpse Of Victorian Childhood/Tangled Up In You" compilation cassette (Tangled UK, Tangled 005)
  • 1989 "Orchid Sunrise" on "Somethings Burning In Paradise Again" cassette (UK- no label/cat number) given away free with fanzine of the same name.

Live appearances:

Stewart has played (mostly) drums live, but not recorded with the following bands:

Ashtray Boy - 2002 - Stewart played drums and guitar with Ashtray Boy on a couple of songs during the Boyracer/Kanda/Ashtray Boy tour of the USA and Canada.
The Lucksmiths - 2002 - Stewart played drums with the Lucksmiths on 3 dates in Australia when Boyracer played with the Lucksmiths and Tali broke his wrist the week before the shows. It was noted how fast their songs suddenly became!
Origami - 2003 - USA drummer on summer tour, plus dates in Australia 2002.
Girlboy Girl - 2001 - USA drummer summer tour
Superdrug - Stewart played guitar with these French superstars in 1994 in Paris. (Superdrug later became Clair)
Even As We Speak - various performances with Mary, often under the name of EAWS, but sometimes as "Mary Wyer", in Australia and USA between 2001-2003. Stewart played drums, guitar and sang.
Panel Of Judges - 2000 - Melbourne Australia.
Famous Boyfriend - 1994 - Stewart played drums for them on two occasions when their drum machine didn’t work.
A Boy Named Thor - Stewart played drums with Thor in Pittsburgh 2000. I'm sure he doesn’t want reminding, but I still have fond memories… ha ha!
